Why Piano Lessons?

In a time where there seems to be an endless supply of extracurricular activities for children, why choose to put them in piano lessons?

Great question!

First off, the piano teaches them foundational principles of music. Music is a universal language and such a gift to be able to understand and use to communicate and express yourself. The piano is a great medium to learn music because it involves learning both clefs making it an incredible gateway to other instruments if the piano isn’t your child’s thing long-term or they want to learn another instrument someday. We learn music theory, rhythm, improvisation, and also work on training our ears—all things that will give your child skills to succeed in all areas of music.

Second, the piano is a great starting instrument because it doesn’t require amazing technique to still sound pretty good. Let me explain…Obviously, pianists spend years mastering their techniques and students will learn how to improve their technique through lessons, but unlike some instruments, you can sound pretty good from day one! Guitar, violin, wind instruments, etc. can sometimes take children so long to even be able to make coherent sounds that they lose interest before they’ve really had the chance to learn music. The piano is a great way for them to build confidence in their musical abilities!

Lastly, the piano teaches hard work and discipline. I know I just expressed that kids can catch on quickly to the piano, but that in no way means it’s easy. Playing piano takes effort, determination, and lots of practice. It teaches them the value of sticking with something even if it’s difficult and that patience and practice can take you a long way!

About Me

Hello! I am wife to Stephen, homeschool mom to three beautiful young children, and a piano instructor here in Sonoma county!

I began teaching lessons last year and am thrilled to be expanding my teaching! I am not a professional musician, but I have been playing the piano for many years and have a lot of experience teaching children in various settings. As a homeschool mom, I’m well aware that you don’t necessarily have to be a professional at something in order to teach it effectively. You do have to have a passion to teach and a continual desire to learn and grow. I am always researching and finding new techniques and strategies to help my students learn. I believe learning is a lifelong pursuit, and I hope to inspire my students to do the same and give them a love and passion for piano and music that will stay with them for a lifetime!

When I began taking lessons at the age of seven, it was customary for piano lessons to be a certain way—sit at a piano, look at a book, play super boring songs for almost two years as you learned each individual note—frankly, boring. Eventually, when I was skilled enough to play songs I actually wanted to play, I fell in love with it. But sadly, most kids quit long before they reach that point. And I completely get it! When I decided to start teaching, I knew I wanted to take a different approach, one that was engaging, fun, and encompassed all learning types. Every lesson looks different depending on the student and subject matter, but I try my hardest to make it an enjoyable experience for the student that fits their individual needs. If I can impart to them a love for music, that will take them further than any teacher could!

Testimonials

Naomi (Parent)

"Jessica is a joy to be around! She has been giving lessons to my 11 & 13 year old “big kids”. She is very interested in the way that they learn and will adjust lessons in a way that is enjoyable yet challenging. My kids LOVE playing the piano and look forward to lessons with her every week. I’m not a musician, but I know they’ve learned so much in a short amount of time. This was especially noticeable during the Christmas season as they filled our home with beautiful Christmas songs all month. My 6 year old was worried he was missing out on all the fun, so we just signed him up too! She’s great with all ages of kids and affordable even for a large family."

Ali (Parent)

"My 8 year old loves taking piano with Jessica! She is learning so much about music theory and is building a really strong foundation. Jessica is great at making the lesson fun and uses many teaching techniques throughout the lesson to keep it interesting. My daughter is so in love with the process. Jessica has helped inspire her and she has been writing out her own songs and playing them. It really is awesome to watch!"
